There are thousands of mods already available for Factorio. And so far, they’ve all accumulated millions of downloads between them, which is very impressive with the game still being in Early Access.
Mods make many changes to Factorio. They might overhaul spawns, add new items and blueprints, implement new enemies, expand on existing systems and there’s even some which add items such as aircraft’s.

Install Factorio Mods In-Game
The easiest and most user-friendly way of downloading Factorio mods would be to do it from the in-game menu. Whilst at the home screen, choose the ‘Mods’ option (you can’t select it whilst you are currently playing a game world). When you do this, you’ll be prompted with a log-in screen when heading to the Install section.

You’ll need to create an account at the Factorio Website, found here. Once you’ve signed up, confirm your email and head back to the website. Press your username in the top right corner, and link your Steam account at the bottom.
This just confirms to the developers that you own an official copy of the game. Now head back to the game and login with the credentials you just created.

You can now browse through a list of available mods by going to the ‘Install’ tab. Use the other buttons at the top of the column to sort mods by trending, most downloaded, latest and more.
Install Factorio Mods Manually
The other way of installing Factorio mods would be by doing it manually. Firstly, find a mod you like on the Factorio Website and download it as a .ZIP file. Again, this will require you to create an account on their website and then link your Steam account to your Factorio Profile.
Once you have the .ZIP file, it needs to be placed into the Factorio Mods folder, which is located in the User Directory, specifically AppData/Roaming. To get there, open up your Start Menu on PC and type %appdata% into the search bar and press Enter, then go into the Factorio Folder, then Mods. Alternatively, you can head to this directory C:\Users\YOUR USER\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\mods.
Simply drop the modded .ZIP file into the mods folder, it doesn’t need to be opened or extracted. Once done, restart Factorio if it’s open, then go to the ‘Mods’ section from the home screen. You can confirm that mods are installed by checking under the ‘Manage’ tab.
