Forager has surprising depth for its simple appearance, and there are mechanics that aren’t immediately obvious to new players. After completing multiple playthroughs, I’ve compiled the tips and tricks that make the biggest difference in your progression speed and overall enjoyment.
This guide covers essential knowledge for new players, from accessory priorities to automation strategies that will save you hours of manual grinding.
Craft Accessories Early – They’re Not Just Armor
Many new players skip accessories, assuming they only provide defense. In reality, accessories offer powerful passive bonuses that stack throughout the game:
- Backpacks – Adds up to 20 extra inventory slots at max tier
- Wallets – Coins are worth up to 150% more in total (massive for late game)
- Gloves – Increases attack speed by up to 70%
- Boots – Increases movement speed by up to 70% and adds 25% dodge chance
- Amulets – Gain up to 125% more resources when gathering
- Books – Gain up to 75% more experience
The Amulet and Book bonuses are particularly impactful. Start crafting these at the Sewing Station as soon as you unlock it, and upgrade them whenever you have materials available.
Upgrade Your Tools Immediately
Tool upgrades provide dramatic efficiency improvements that compound over time. The four essential tools are your Pickaxe, Sword, Bow, and Shovel.

At higher upgrade tiers, your Sword gains area-of-effect harvesting that’s actually faster than the Pickaxe for clearing resources. The Shovel’s dig radius expands from a single tile to roughly 20 tiles at max level, making archaeology and gem farming dramatically faster.
Don’t Tunnel Vision on One Skill Tree
Forager has 64 skills across multiple trees, and it’s tempting to complete one tree before moving to another. This is a mistake. Instead, cherry-pick valuable skills from each tree early:
- Brilliance (Magic Tree) – Available as your second skill, provides 20% XP bonus
- Commerce (Economy Tree) – Unlocks Banks and Markets, gives 40 free coins
- Foraging (Foraging Tree) – 4 extra inventory slots immediately
- Industry (Industry Tree) – Unlocks Furnace for Gold Ingots
Check out our complete skills guide for detailed recommendations on skill priority.
Build Multiple Markets
Markets restock their inventory approximately every 10 minutes, selling different items each time. Building multiple Markets (5-10+) means you always have access to useful items like Spirit Orbs, rare materials, and crafting components.
The Supply skill makes Markets sell 6 items instead of 3, doubling their usefulness. With enough Markets and coins, you can buy almost any resource you need rather than farming it manually.
Save the Museum for Endgame
The Museum accepts donations of various items in exchange for Big Chests and eventually a Seal. While the rewards are nice, the items you donate are often more valuable for crafting and progression during mid-game.

Exception: Donate rare archaeology items like the Golden Egg that are difficult to find again. Otherwise, sell archaeology drops for coins or hold materials for crafting.
Master Automation Early
The Automation skill (Industry Tree) unlocks Mining Rods and makes crafted items auto-collect. This is a game-changer:
- Mining Rods – Automatically harvest all resources in a large radius
- Droids – Collect dropped items, harvest from animals, and empty fishing traps
- Auto-collection – Crafted items fly to your inventory automatically
Place one Mining Rod on each island to keep resources flowing and prevent your lands from becoming overgrown. Add Ballistas near Mining Rods to automatically kill spawning enemies.
Use Landfill to Expand Build Space
Many players don’t realize you can reclaim water tiles. Build a Flower Press and craft Landfill blocks, which can be placed on any water tile to convert it to land.
This is cleaner than building bridges everywhere and gives you significantly more space for structures on each island.
Prioritize Coin Generation
Island prices scale dramatically, and you’ll need hundreds of thousands of coins to unlock everything. Focus on:
- Banks – Cluster them together with the Treasury skill for 50% faster generation
- Wallet upgrades – Each tier multiplies coin value
- Selling gems – Archaeology items from dig spots sell for high prices
- Crafting coins – Gold Ingots can be converted directly at the Forge
Spend Spirit Orbs on Levels
Spirit Orbs are consumables found in Big Chests that let you choose between upgrading max health, max energy, weapon damage, or instantly leveling up.

Once XP gains slow down in late game, use Spirit Orbs for instant levels. There’s no cap on how many you can use, and Markets regularly sell them cheaply. You can always buy more later to max out health and energy.
Don’t Ignore Potions and Scrolls
Consumables provide powerful temporary buffs that many players overlook:
- Sage Scroll – Grants massive XP per use, craft multiples for fast leveling
- Liquid Luck Potion – Increases rare item drops
- Wisdom Draught – Doubles XP and fully restores health/energy on level up
Craft these at the Inscription Table (requires the Inscription skill) and use them before farming sessions for maximum efficiency. Check our scrolls guide for the complete list.
Customize Your Character
You can change your character’s appearance using cosmetic items unlocked from completing Feats. Find the Wardrobe inside the Druid’s Treehouse located in the Grass Biome to apply your unlocked cosmetics.
