Coal is essential in Forager – you need it to smelt Iron and Gold Ingots at the Furnace, which are required for nearly every crafted item. Early game, Coal shortages are common and can slow your progress significantly.
Method 1: Mine Coal Rocks
Dark gray/black rocks contain Coal. Mining them drops Coal directly. The Mining skill (Foraging tree) provides 40% more minerals from every rock mined, including Coal.
Method 2: Craft Coal at the Furnace
Many players miss this: you can create Coal at the Furnace. It’s the first option in the Furnace menu.
Recipe: 2 Wood → 1 Coal
Since Wood is abundant from chopping trees, this provides unlimited Coal as long as you have Wood.
Method 3: Geology Skill (Best Method)
The Geology skill in the Foraging tree makes every rock you mine also drop Coal, regardless of rock type. After unlocking this skill, you’ll have more Coal than you know what to do with.
This is the most efficient long-term solution – you’ll passively collect thousands of Coal just from normal gameplay.
Method 4: Stone to Coal
You can also smelt Stone into Coal at the Furnace (it’s one of the default Furnace recipes). Stone is extremely common, making this another reliable Coal source.
Coal Uses
- Smelting ores – Iron Ore + Coal = Iron Ingot, Gold Ore + Coal = Gold Ingot
- Selling – Coal sells for about 3 coins each (useful with Geology skill overflow)
- Crafting – Some advanced recipes require Coal
Priority Recommendation
Unlock Geology as soon as possible. Until then, craft Coal from Wood at the Furnace to bridge the gap. The Mining skill’s 40% bonus also helps significantly in the early game.
