Llamas are the primary way to obtain heroes, schematics, survivors, and other items in Fortnite: Save the World. The llama system has evolved significantly over the years, moving from randomized loot boxes to the current X-Ray Llama system where you can see exactly what you’ll get before purchasing.
This guide covers how llamas work in Save the World, the different types available, and how to earn X-Ray Tickets to purchase them.
How Llamas Work Now
As of March 2022, llamas can no longer be purchased with V-Bucks or real money. Epic Games removed the ability to buy gameplay-affecting items for cash, making Save the World’s progression entirely earnable through gameplay.
All llamas are now purchased with X-Ray Tickets, a currency earned by playing Save the World. Before you buy any llama, you can see its exact contents through the X-Ray feature—no more gambling on random loot.
Types of Llamas
The Llama Shop offers several types of llamas, each with different contents and costs:
Upgrade Llama
The basic llama type, costing 50 X-Ray Tickets. Upgrade Llamas contain a mix of schematics, heroes, survivors, and resources. While they offer the lowest guaranteed rarity, they’re affordable and good for newer players building their collection.
X-Ray Llamas (Rotating Selection)
The Llama Shop features rotating X-Ray Llamas with varying themes and costs (typically 50 to 1,500 X-Ray Tickets). These might focus on specific item types like:
- People Llama – Contains heroes and survivors
- Ranged Weapon Llama – Contains ranged weapon schematics
- Melee Weapon Llama – Contains melee weapon schematics
- Trap Llama – Contains trap schematics
- Super Llamas – Higher-cost llamas with guaranteed legendary items
Check the shop daily, as the selection and contents rotate regularly.
Jackpot and Golden Llamas
Occasionally, the X-Ray Llama preview will show a Jackpot or Golden Llama. These contain higher rarity items and are worth saving your tickets for when they appear. Since you can see the contents before purchasing, wait for a llama that has items you actually need.
The X-Ray Feature
The X-Ray system was introduced in 2019 to address concerns about randomized loot boxes. Here’s how it works:
- Every llama in the shop shows its complete contents on the right side of the screen
- You can see every item, including rarity and specific stats
- The contents refresh when the shop rotates (usually daily)
- If a llama doesn’t have anything you want, simply wait for the next rotation
This system lets you make informed decisions about your X-Ray Ticket spending rather than gambling on random drops.
How to Earn X-Ray Tickets
X-Ray Tickets are earned through various Save the World activities. Here are the main sources:
Daily Quests
You receive one Daily Quest each day upon logging in. These reward 80-130 X-Ray Tickets depending on difficulty. Quests stack up to three if you miss days.
Mission Alerts
Certain missions on the map display alert rewards, which can include X-Ray Tickets (typically 25-40 tickets per mission). Check the map for missions with ticket rewards.
Storm Shield Defenses
Completing Storm Shield Defense missions in your own Homebase rewards X-Ray Tickets:
- SSD 1-9: 100 X-Ray Tickets each
- SSD 10: 150 X-Ray Tickets
These are one-time rewards per zone (Stonewood, Plankerton, Canny Valley, Twine Peaks).
Challenge Quests
Special challenge questlines like “Hold the Door!” reward 50 X-Ray Tickets per stage, with 20 stages total for 1,000 tickets.
Tips for Spending X-Ray Tickets Wisely
Check the shop daily. Contents rotate regularly, so a legendary hero or schematic you need might appear tomorrow.
Prioritize what you need. Since you can see contents before buying, only spend tickets on llamas with items that will actually help your loadout or collection.
Save for Super Llamas. While they cost more (often 1,000+ tickets), Super Llamas guarantee legendary items. If the preview shows something valuable, it’s worth the investment.
Don’t buy duplicates. If you already have a weapon schematic at the same or higher rarity, skip it unless you want it for the Collection Book.
Complete Daily Quests consistently. The most reliable ticket income comes from doing your dailies every day. Even 10 minutes of play can knock out a quest.
Founders vs Non-Founders
The X-Ray Ticket system works the same for all Save the World players. However, there’s an important distinction:
- Founders (players who purchased STW before June 2020) still earn V-Bucks from Daily Quests and certain missions, in addition to X-Ray Tickets
- Non-Founders earn X-Ray Tickets instead of V-Bucks from the same activities
Regardless of Founder status, everyone uses X-Ray Tickets to purchase llamas—V-Bucks cannot be used in the Llama Shop.
