Umbrellas in Fortnite
When you play Fortnite Battle Royale, and first jump off the Battle Bus, you will have a glider by default. This is what you deploy in order to slowly descend onto a location of your choosing. There are many variants of gliders available, with different designs often able to be bought from the store with V-Bucks.
However, one thing you may have noticed is some players have umbrellas over gliders, and you also most probably haven’t spotted these in the store. Unlike the gliders, these aren’t purchased, as they must be unlocked instead.
How to unlock umbrellas in Fortnite: Battle Royale
If you’re reading this article and you don’t have an umbrella in Fortnite’s Battle Royale, that means you haven’t won a game yet. As that’s how you actually grab one. By winning a single game of Battle Royale, you will unlock the umbrella.
If you win a solo match and receive the umbrella, you then won’t have it in squads. You’ll have to win a game as a squad to unlock one for that mode. It works the other way round too.
There have been many suggestions by players to have different variations of the umbrellas so they’re in tiers. These would be made of different materials or textures depending on how many wins you have accumulated in Battle Royale. Other variations of the umbrella can’t be purchased from the store currently.

However during the winter event that took place a month ago, if you won a match during it, you would receive a different variation of the umbrella which had snowflakes on. If you are a ‘Founder’ of Fortnite, which means you bought into the early access PvE mode (Save the world), you automatically get a camouflaged variation of the umbrella.
If anything, this shows that we can probably expect many variations of the umbrellas design in the future, and you will be able to choose from within your locker. We may also see tiered umbrellas too!
