Fortnite Battle Royale Cross Platform PC & PS4 Guide

Fortnite supports full cross-platform play across all platforms: PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices. You can team up with friends regardless of what device they’re using, and all your progress, V-Bucks, and cosmetics carry over between platforms when linked to the same Epic Games account.

This guide covers how to set up cross-play, add friends on different platforms, and understand how matchmaking works when playing with mixed groups.

Supported Platforms

Fortnite cross-play works between all of these platforms:

• PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
• Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
• Nintendo Switch
• PC (Epic Games Store)
• Android devices
• Cloud gaming services (Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW)

Cross-play is enabled by default and works across all Fortnite game modes including Battle Royale, Zero Build, LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, and Creative.

How to Play Cross-Platform

Step 1: Create or Link an Epic Games Account

Cross-play works through Epic Games accounts. PC players already have one, but console players need to link their platform account to an Epic account.

If you’ve never linked your account:

1. Go to epicgames.com/account/connections
2. Log in with your Epic account (or create one if you don’t have one)
3. Under “Apps and Accounts,” click Connect next to your platform (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, etc.)
4. Sign in to your console account to complete the link

You can link multiple platform accounts to the same Epic account, but only one account per platform (e.g., one PlayStation account, one Xbox account).

Step 2: Add Friends Using Epic IDs

To play with friends on other platforms, you need to add them using their Epic Games username (not their PlayStation Network ID, Xbox Gamertag, or Nintendo account name).

1. Launch Fortnite
2. Open the Social menu (friends icon in the top bar)
3. Click Add Friends
4. Enter your friend’s Epic Games display name
5. Send the friend request

Your friend will receive the request in their Fortnite social menu. Once they accept, you’ll see each other in your Epic Friends list regardless of platform.

Step 3: Invite Friends to Your Party

Once you’re friends:

1. Open the Social menu
2. Find your friend in the Epic Friends list
3. Select their name and choose Invite to Party
4. Alternatively, if they’re already in a party, you can select Join Party

Voice chat works automatically across platforms when you’re in the same party.

Finding Your Epic Games Display Name

Your Epic Games display name is what friends need to add you. To find it:

In Fortnite: Your Epic display name appears at the top of your screen in the lobby, and in the Social menu.

On the Epic Games website: Log in at epicgames.com and go to Account > General. Your display name is shown at the top.

Note that your Epic display name may be different from your console username. Share your Epic name with friends who want to add you.

How Cross-Platform Matchmaking Works

When playing with friends on different platforms, matchmaking is determined by the “highest tier” platform in your party:

• PC players are considered the highest tier due to mouse and keyboard advantages
• Console players (PlayStation, Xbox) are grouped together
• Nintendo Switch and mobile players are in a lower tier

If your party includes a PC player, you’ll be matched against other PC players and mixed parties. A party of only console players will primarily face other console players.

This means Switch and mobile players joining PC friends will face tougher competition than they would playing solo. Keep this in mind when forming mixed groups.

Enabling or Disabling Cross-Play

Cross-play is enabled by default. If you want to disable it (which limits you to only playing with people on the same platform family):

1. Open Fortnite Settings
2. Go to the Account and Privacy tab
3. Find Allow Cross-Platform Play
4. Toggle it Off

Important: Disabling cross-play may significantly increase queue times, especially in less populated regions or game modes. Some modes may require cross-play to be enabled to find matches.

Progress and Purchases Across Platforms

When your accounts are linked to the same Epic Games account:

• Battle Pass progress carries over between all platforms
• Cosmetics (skins, emotes, pickaxes, etc.) are available everywhere
• Stats and levels are shared across platforms
• Friends lists sync across all devices

V-Bucks exception: V-Bucks purchased on PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch are only available on that platform family. V-Bucks earned from the Battle Pass or Save the World are available everywhere. V-Bucks purchased on PC/mobile are also available everywhere.

Troubleshooting Cross-Play Issues

Can’t find friend by Epic name: Make sure you’re using their Epic Games display name, not their console username. Double-check spelling and capitalization.

Friend request not appearing: Check your Epic Games privacy settings at epicgames.com. Ensure you haven’t blocked friend requests from people outside your friends list.

Can’t join friend’s party: Make sure you’re both online in Fortnite (not just on the console home screen). Try restarting Fortnite if the issue persists.

Voice chat not working: Check that voice chat is enabled in Fortnite’s audio settings on both devices. Also verify your platform’s parental controls aren’t blocking voice chat.

Account linking issues: If you created a “headless” Epic account (one automatically created when you first played on console), you may need to upgrade it to a full account at epicgames.com before linking additional platforms.
