Your Companions don’t level alongside you in The Outer Worlds. You have to constantly upgrade their weapons and armor where possible. If you don’t, you’ll find that they die easier as you progress into higher level areas, and will do less damage.
Luckily, you can switch out armor and weapons really easily. There are also perks which will benefit your companions by increasing their damage, ability cooldowns and health.
Below, we have a quick guide for switching out armor on your companions. For more guides & content for The Outer Worlds on PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One, make sure to check out our dedicated area here!
Changing Companion Armor
Open up the menu screen where you can access your inventory, by pressing TAB on PC. At the top of the screen is the menu, and at the end you will see the names of any companions who are nearby. Choose the companion that you want to upgrade the armor for.

On the first screen, you will see the weapons they have equipped. Move to the next tab, and you will see the armor. At the top of the screen is the armor that they currently have equipped. Then at the bottom, is armor items that are in your inventory.
Simply move them into the equipped slot, overwriting the previous armor. Before equipping them with new armor, it’s a good idea to upgrade it in a Workbench.
