The Trident is one of Minecraft’s newest weapons. It offers a few unique Enchantments which make it an incredibly fun item to use. Some of these Enchantments allow you to have the Trident fly back to you after launching it, summon a bolt of lightning or even be able to fly without creative mode.

In this post, we’re specifically going to look into the flying mechanic. It’s important to note that you can’t fly in the same style as Minecraft’s Creative Mode. Instead, throwing your Trident will cause the Trident to actually carry you with it as it goes.

Below, we’ve put together a quick and short guide containing the details and how to fly with a Trident in Minecraft. We’ve covered plenty more Minecraft Guides, as well as a breakdown of the Best Trident Enchantments too!

How to Fly With a Trident

To fly with a Trident in Minecraft, you will first need to obtain the ‘Riptide’ Enchantment from an Enchanting Table. Apply it to your Trident, and then throw it like normal. This will allow you to fly with the Trident as it launches through the sky.

The Riptide Enchantment has a maximum enchantment level of 3, and the chance of receiving it from the table are completely random so it may take a few attempts. You might also be able to obtain the Riptide Enchantment from a Librarian Villager, who sells Enchanted Books at the price of Emeralds.

What you need to know about Riptide is that it only works in water. So you’ll need to be in a body of water such as a lake, ocean or pond in Minecraft. Otherwise, you can use it in the rain. Input the command /weather rain to turn on rain instantly in your game world.

When you want to fly, hold right click (on PC) to charge the Trident and let go to throw it. You will be thrown along with the Trident and land at quite a high speed, so it’s recommended you have Boots of Feather Falling to prevent fall damage.

You can also charge the Trident again whilst you are mid-air to either keep climbing upwards or forwards. Although this is a little difficult at first, you’ll need to charge the Trident again as soon as you enter the air.

Other Trident Enchantments

There are some other Enchantments for the Trident which make it a great weapon to use. If you have the Loyalty Enchantment, then each time you throw your Trident, it will return to your hand after a few seconds. You’ll feel a lot like Thor & Mjolnir if you’re a Marvel fan!

Another interesting Enchantment is Channeling. When attacking with a Trident, you will also cast a bolt of lightning at the attack location with Channeling applied. Although this only works during thunder storms, which are quite rare in Minecraft.

Applying the Impaling Enchantment will allow you to deal significantly more damage to any water-based mobs. This includes the likes of Fish, Drowned, Squid and more.
