In The Outer Worlds, one of the mechanics is to modify, or mod your weapons so that they have special stats and features. For example, you can change the damage type, sights and fire rate.
Modifying weapons is essential. Eventually, as you progress through the game, you’ll do less damage and enemies will be more difficult to kill. Until you can find some higher level equipment, adding mods to your guns and melee items is essential.
Below, we’ll show you how to mod weapons in-game. For more guides & content for The Outer Worlds on PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One, make sure to check out our dedicated area here!
Modding Weapons in The Outer Worlds
To mod a weapon, you will need to open a Workbench. These can be found in most towns in-game, but the most convenient one is located on your ship, The Unreliable. Once inside the Workbench, you’ll be in the ‘Modify’ section, specifically in the weapons area.

Choose the weapons you want to modify. Any weapons you have equipped will have a gold background. Press the corresponding button for ‘Install Mod’. If you don’t see a Modify option, it’s possible you haven’t unlocked the right skill yet.

You will see a list of available modifications for that weapon. Note that these mods are items in your inventory. You can buy them from vendors or loot them from containers and bodies in the game world.
