Red Dead Redemption 2’s Record-Breaking Launch

Rockstar has done it again. Red Dead Redemption 2 had the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history, grossing $725 million in three days.

Technically, Grand Theft Auto V still had a bigger launch, grossing a billion dollars, but since it launched on a Tuesday, Red Dead 2 still had a bigger opening weekend, since it launched on a Friday.

Honestly, though, does second place overall really even count when it’s second to yourself? It would be like Usain Bolt running his record-breaking 9.58-second 100 metre dash, and then running again and getting 9.57 seconds. Like, we get it, relax.

The reviews seem to back up this huge accomplishment as well. Check out a quick ratings roundup below.

Metacritic – 97/100

IGN – 10/10

Gamespot – 9/10

GamesRadar+ – 5/5

Game Informer – 10/10

The Guardian – 5/5

USGamer – 4.5/5

Eurogamer – Recommended

Forbes – 9/10

Basically, it’s an absolute masterpiece. Stop reading about it and go play it.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now on PS4 and Xbox One. Red Dead Online is launching later this month. We’re still waiting (and hoping) for a PC version.

I'm a Brooklyn transplant looking to make a ripple in the ocean of creative minds. I've been writing as a hobby for about four years, and I am in the process of turning that hobby into a career. I've self-published two novels and a collection of short stories and personal essays. I've had around 300 articles published across a few online media outlets. I've written a feature screenplay, a drama series pilot screenplay, and a stageplay. Basically, I just love to tell stories, no matter the format. I always like to say that a writer doesn't create stories; they discover them.
