Why would you control Kodi from your phone?

Are you obsessed with using your smart phone and making it compatible with everything you own? Then setting up your device to work with Kodi is exactly what you need to do next! There are many reasons you may want to control Kodi from your phone, such as:

  • You’ve lost the physical remote that you use to control Kodi
  • It’s much more intuitive and faster than using a remote
  • Batteries are dead
  • Maybe you just prefer to use your phone?

The techniques below work for both iPhones and Android devices. At the bottom, there is also a quick guide for what to do if you’ve lost your FireStick remote, and now can’t control Kodi or get into the actual app.

When you set up Kodi to work from your phone, tablet or browser, it’s completely secure as it will only be accessible when you’re connected to your own WiFi, AND it requires a username and password. You aren’t strapped down to this however, if you chose to, you could control your Kodi from a completely different country!

To use the techniques shown in this guide, you will have to enable control via HTTP in the Kodi Settings. You can find this under the Services section. You will need to choose a username and password, as well as knowing your local IP for the device. All this is relatively simple, we’ve set up a guide here.

Before we start

PwrDown highly recommends you use a VPN when using Kodi. Users have reported receiving legal notices due to streaming Movies, TV Shows & Live Content through Kodi add-ons & builds. We recommend using IPVanish. IPVanish is one of the only top tier VPNs and it’s tailored specifically for Kodi users. It works on almost all devices including the Amazon Fire Stick Using IPVanish will:

  • Hide your IP Address.
  • Prevent your ISP from spying on you.
  • Make your online presence anonymous.
  • Allow access to blocked content from other countries.
  • Hide your streaming habits!

Control Kodi from your phone using the app

The easiest method for controlling Kodi from your phone is using a designated app. Thankfully, this app already exists on both the Apple Store for iPhone and the Google Play Store for Android. You will need to setup web control inside of the Kodi application. Do this by going to “System > Services > Remote control”. Choose Allow remote control via HTTP and enter a username and password. It’s a simple and quick process. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to play, pause and choose media from within the app on your smart phone.

If you enable port forwarding or other connection methods such as Hamachi, you could take this further and control your Kodi setup from a PC in a different country if you really wanted to!

Using the web interface

Another option if you wish to not download the app, is to use the built in web interface. The steps are the exact same for using a smart phone, however you don’t download the app. Just make sure inside of Kodi, you have gone into “System > Services > Remote control” and ticked the “Enable HTTP access box”. Make sure to choose a username and password too.

By enabling remote control inside Kodi, you can type in the IP Address, followed by the port number into your web browser to get to the web interface. The web interface also has a lot of custom skins which you can try out to make the web experience better. Think of the web interface as an enhanced remote control and TV guide, you can browse your TV Shows and Movies. Just pick a file, press play and you’ll see it hit your big screen instantly!

Amazon Fire Stick users

Both the methods above work with controlling Kodi remotely, however if you own a Fire Stick there is a much easier way. Amazon have created an app called “Fire TV Remote”, and it’s available on both the Apple Store and Google Play store.

Fire TV Remote will turn your smart device into a fully functional controller for your Fire Stick, allowing you to browse the menus, access the Kodi app and play media.

You could argue it’s actually better than the official remote as using the phones keypad over pressing the arrow buttons on the remote is a huge advantage. You can also use the Microphone feature to control it which is a great feature. It can be a little hard to get used to, but it’s definitely a simple work around.
