Fabric is a mod loader for Minecraft, and more and more mods have been supporting it lately. In this guide, we’re going to show you how to install Fabric, and start playing it. Fabric is an alternative to the Forge Mod Loader.
We’ve covered more content like that at PwrDown, where you can check out our Minecraft Guides. We created this guide during Minecraft 1.16, so some things could be different if you’re playing on newer or previous versions of Minecraft.
Step 1: Download Fabric
Firstly, you’re going to want to download the Fabric installer. There are two versions available. One is a Windows installer (EXE File), and the other is a Universal Installer (JAR File).

If you are on Mac or Linux, you’re going to want the JAR File, but for the purpose of this tutorial, we’ll use EXE. Once the file is downloaded, open it.
SmartScreen Error
If you are on Windows, there’s a chance that you get a popup about ‘Windows protected your PC’. All you need to do is click ‘More info’, then the ‘Run anyway’ button will become visible, which you should click.
Step 2: Install the Fabric Loader
With the Fabric Installer open, there are two options available. These are the tabs at the top, and are for ‘Client’ and ‘Server’. No matter what, you’re going to need to install the Client, as this is the single player version. If you want to create a Fabric server, then you’ll obviously need to install the Server option too.
You can leave the loader version alone, as well as the install location (unless you’ve changed the default Minecraft directory). You can choose your Minecraft Version that you want Fabric to use, then press the ‘Install’ button.
Step 3: Run Minecraft with Fabric
Next, open up the Minecraft Launcher. In the bottom left corner of the screen, you can find all of your Minecraft profiles. Select the dropdown, then select the ‘Fabric Loader’ profile.

When you press the Play button in the Minecraft Launcher, it will launch with Fabric installed and ready to use. If you want to install mods, these can go into the mods folder of your default Minecraft directory.
