In this Minecraft Guide, we’re going to show everything you need to know about Blast Furnaces. Specifically what they are, and how you can obtain them. Blast Furnaces where added in Minecraft 1.14, the Village & Pillage Update.
Blast Furnaces act as a job block. Meaning that if you place one down in a Village, any free Villagers will be able to take up the role of an Armorer, giving access to new trades.
We’ve covered more content like that at PwrDown, where you can check out our Minecraft Guides. We created this guide during Minecraft 1.16, so some things could be different if you’re playing on newer or previous versions of Minecraft.
What are Blast Furnaces
Blast Furnaces are a smelting block in Minecraft, which is used to smelt Raw Ores into their Ingot form. Unlike normal furnaces, they can’t smelt other items such as Food.

Unlike a Furnace, the Blast Furnace can also be used to smelt down tools and armor to give ingredients back. When using a Blast Furnace to smelt items, it will work twice as fast, but only give half the normal experience.
How to Get a Blast Furnace
When you want to pickup a Blast Furnace, make sure to use a Pickaxe. Using the wrong type of tool, or no tool at all will result in no item being obtained, and it simply vanishing. The type of pickaxe doesn’t matter either, as long as it’s wood or above.
You can also find Blast Furnaces inside of Villages. Specifically, if a Village has an Armorer Villager, search inside their house.
Blast Furnace Recipe
To craft a Blast Furnace, you will need to place 5 Iron Ingots, 1 Furnace and 3 Smooth Stone into a Crafting Table. Place the Ingots in a ‘U’ shape, with the Furnace in the center slot, then the 3 Smooth Stone along the bottom slots.

You should already know how to obtain both Iron Ingots and a Furnace (8 Cobblestone in a Crafting Table). However, Smooth Stone is a relatively new material in Minecraft. To create it, you should place Cobblestone in a furnace to turn it into ‘Stone’. Then, smelt the Stone to turn that into ‘Smooth Stone’.
