Shields are a necessity in Minecraft, whether you’re playing standard survival or on PvP. They allow you to block incoming attacks, it doesn’t matter if they’re melee or ranged.
In this guide, we’re going to show you how to apply a banner to your shield, making it look unique. We’ve covered plenty more Minecraft Guides here at PwrDown.
Adding Banners to Shields
First, you should create a Banner like you normally would with a design of your choice. We’ve covered a few Banner Designs here on our site, which you can follow guides for. Once you have a Banner, you’ll need a Shield too.
Crafting a Shield
Next, you will need to craft a standard Shield. If you already have a Shield, then skip ahead to the next section.

The ingredients for a Shield are 6 Wood Planks and a Single Iron Ingot. Place the ingredients in a Crafting Table, similar to the layout above.
Combine the Shield & Banner
Now that you have your Banner and Shield, it’s time to combine them. Open your Crafting Window in your inventory, or a Crafting Table. Place the two items next to eachother in the slots, and you will receive your Shield back, this time with the Banner applied.

The naming might seem a bit odd, so you can always place the Shield in an Anvil to rename it. Otherwise, you can now equip your shield and take it into combat!
