When a game saves, often there are two places they’re stored. One is locally on your computer (so that you can play offline), and another in the cloud (such as Steam cloud, so that they are permanently backed up and synced between systems). There are a few reasons you might want to know the location of your save files.
Firstly, back-ups are important. In the event that your save becomes corrupt (whether due to a bug, modding issue etc), you likely won’t be able to play that save again, meaning all that progress is lost. By copying and pasting your save folder, you’ll always have a backup you can revert too. It’s always recommended to back-up your save before making any changes to your game.
Another reason you might need to know where your save game is located is so that you can actually modify it. Some games have special software available which allow you to open up your save and edit your character freely.
Where to Find Subnautica Saves
Below, we’re going to show you the Save Location for Subnautica. For more Subnautica guides, make sure to check out our dedicated area here.
Steam Save Location
If you are playing Subnautica on Steam, you can quickly access the save location through Steam. In your Steam Library, choose Subnautica. Then press the Cog on the right hand side of the screen, choose Manage, then Browse Local Files.
This will bring you to the Subnautica installation folder. Now open the ‘SNAppData’ folder, then head into ‘SavedGames’. You’ll see each save file located in a folder named Slot. If you can’t do the process above, the default location for Subnautica is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Subnautica\SNAppData\SavedGames\
Epic Games Save Location
Subnautica is also available on Epic Games, and was even released as one of their free games to players. If you are playing it through Epic Games, the location is a little different, as it’s inside your AppData folder, which by default is:
The easiest way to head there would be by opening up your Start Menu and typing %AppData%. This should bring you to C:\Users\YOUR PROFILE\AppData\Roaming. Head back a menu back into the AppData folder and into LocalLow. Now go into Unknown Worlds > Subnautica > SavedGames.
